To quit or to try to quit- That is the question! by Sydney Colbert

“Smoking is dead, Vaping is the future and the future is now!” is the exact phrase popular YouTuber RiP Trippers uses to conclude every video. With over 1.1 million subscribers on his Youtube page, RiP posts a video everyday covering the latest “mods”, “tanks” and accessories in the world of vaping and averaging over 17,000 likes per video, it’s obvious he has quite a big following.

Before I dive deep into the world of e-cigarettes or vaping, firstly what is Vaping or to Vape? An electronic cigarette or e-cigarette is a handheld electronic device that simulates the feeling of tobacco smoking. It works by heating a liquid to generate an aerosol, commonly called a “vapor” that the user inhales. Using e-cigarettes is sometimes called vaping. The liquid in the e-cigarette, called e-liquid, is usually made of nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin, and flavorings. Not all e-liquids contain nicotine.

Let me give you a little background about myself and how this ties in to me. So I’m in my 20’s and of course growing up in the Middle East, one gets caught up in the regional past times. For me it was hookah or shisha. What started off as having a shisha with a couple of friends once or twice a week turned into a serious habit where I needed at least 2 or 3 a day. Since many of you hail from this part of the world, I’m sure you have some interaction with shisha and its costs. At the time, being a university student, living in an expensive city and trying to manage to pay bills and eat on a fixed limited income, having an addiction to a flavored tobacco nicotine filled bubble incorporated contraption was the last thing I needed. But alas, as in many cases, the addiction took over. I remember there were times when I skipped class and would walk about an hour each way just go get a shisha. Money was tight and to make matters worse, my only priority was to get my hands on it aimlessly smoke away about 3 hours of my day. This continued for about 4 years or so until I moved back home.

A daily routine of wake up, work, come home pretty much took over my life. But still, the shisha was ever present. Its presence always making itself obvious by the musk of apple and grape. It wasn’t until a couple of months ago when my brother received the gift of a vape set from a friend and being the guy that he is, he gave me a try. I was in love! The smoothness of the tobacco custard flavor, the feeling of the vapor hitting the back of my throat, the consistency of every puff I took, I was in love and this was it! The tragic demise of one habit and the beginning of another. Now I am not scientist, or doctor, and the jury is still out on the long term use of E-cigarettes, but one thing is for sure, I dropped that shisha habit like a bowl of soup turning over in an earthquake.

Along the way, I have met numerous people like me are desperate to quit their smoking and I’ve told them to give an e-cigarette a try. As time progresses and studies are done, we are slowly seeing the positive aspects in helping cigarette smokers quit. From my point of view, it works, I can vouch for it. After all, just give it a shot and remember, buy original and buy smart, RESEARCH IS THE KEY!
